super foods...

Imagine a food - not a drug - powerful enough to help you peel off pounds, lower your cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer, and, as an added bonus, put you in a better mood - with no side effects.

Well, these life-altering "Superfoods" are available right now in your local supermarket.

Early Show medical contributor Dr. Mallika Marshall explains what they are, and how they work.

Quinoa: Quinoa is a whole grain from South America that's growing in popularity here in the United States. It's loaded with fiber and protein, which can keep you feeling full and satisfied throughout the day. A little more than 1/2 cup has five grams of fiber and 13 grams of protein. You can substitute it for rice with stir-fry or as a side dish or you can cook it like oatmeal in the morning and serve it with nuts and berries for breakfast.

Pomegranates: Pomegranate juice has become quite popular in the past few years, but the seeds not only have all the benefits of the juice with antioxidants and folate, but they also have a lot of fiber which again will help curb your appetite. You can simply buy them already shucked from the fruit as a healthy snack or you can add them to yogurt or salads as a colorful and healthy garnish.

Goji Berries: Goji Berries are chewy, tart berries which taste like a cross between a cherry and a cranberry. They have been used as a medicinal food for nearly 2,000 years in Tibet. They are chock full of antioxidants, and have more betacarotene than carrots. And, unlike most other fruits, they contain a lot of protein, again, something that will help curb your hunger. You can find them at specialty supermarkets. You can eat them alone or as a snack, or add them to a cup of yogurt, or to your cereal in the morning.

Almond Butter: Adding almond butter to your bread for breakfast or lunch may actually help keep your blood sugar from rising so quickly, which means you won't get the spikes in sugar and insulin and won't get those dips that lead to hunger. You can substitute it for peanut butter in sandwiches or add it to oatmeal for added flavor and protein.

Eggs: Eggs were labeled as being high in cholesterol and bad for the heart, but if cooked in a healthy fashion, they can not only be nutritious, but also a great way to help people lose weight. A recent study found that men who ate protein for breakfast, like eggs, were much less likely to overeat during the day and lost more weight than people who ate carbohydrates for breakfast.

Kale: You can find kale at most grocery stores near the spinach and collard greens. It's a green leafy vegetable that has a lot of fiber, calcium and iron. It has a heartier flavor than spinach. You can chop it and add it to beans and soups or you can sauté it with garlic and olive oil for a nice side dish.

These "Superfoods" do a lot more than help you lose weight. Many are good for the heart or help improve memory, like fish rich in Omega-3. And one thing all "Superfoods" have in common is that they are all "raw," meaning unprocessed. So you won't find things like chips, candy or ice cream in the "Superfood" category.

camila about matthew...

Camila Alves doesn’t think of Matthew McConaughey as the Sexiest Man Alive. She thinks of him as a devoted and involved dad to their 2-month-old son Levi.

“I don’t look at him like that,” she told BabyCenter. “He’s a man – he’s my man – and we’re a family. He’s the best dad he can be, 100-percent hands-on.”

Camila, 25, also opened up about her grueling 60-hour labor.

“It wasn’t such a pleasant experience,” she shared. “We went through 14 hours with contractions every two minutes, no epidural, no nothing. Every two minutes I would pass out. I went to the hospital on Saturday, and Levi was born on Monday.”

Despite her desire to give birth naturally, Camila underwent a C-section. “We tried every single way of giving birth. It didn’t work. I wasn’t too crazy about having to do a C-section and take all the drugs. Finally, I just had to be like, ‘Let it go.’ ” And finally, Levi was born at 6:22 p.m. July 7, at 7 lbs., 4 oz.

Since then, Levi has kept a full social calendar, tagging along with his parents to a John Mellencamp concert, the launch of his mom’s luxury handbag line and Matthew’s participation in a 10K in Austin.

All the excitement is no problem for Levi, Camila said. “If our lifestyle was doing anything to harm him, we’d have to adapt, but he loves it. He loves the action. He loves to be right in the middle of it. He actually doesn’t like it when it’s too quiet.”

Camila also shared that she and Matthew plan to raise Levi bilingually. “Most of my family doesn’t speak English. It’s so important for the baby. He’s going to know all his American roots, but he also needs to know about his Brazilian side.”

quote for the day... and it's a great one!!

"We have no choice of what color we're born or who our parents are or whether we're rich or poor. What we do have is some choice over what we make of our lives once we're here."

this one is freaking great!!!

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion and I kept
staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby
table...
My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'
Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking
right after we split up those many years ago and I hear she hasn't been
sober since.'
'My God!' says my wife, 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating
that long?'

And then the fight started...

ha ha ... another funny one!

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social
Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to
verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at
home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home
and come back late...
The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt.'
So, I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair...
She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she
processed my Social Security application...
When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social
Security office...
She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten
disability, too.'

And then the fight started...

funny joke...

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive...

So, I took her to a gas station...

And then the fight started...

Why Women Should Vote!!!

WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers;
they lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right
to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed, nonetheless, for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'

(Lucy Burns)

They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

(Dora Lewis)

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack.
Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.

(Alice Paul)

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because--why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

HBO's movie 'Iron Jawed Angels' is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that we could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have our say.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring
to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.

We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote Democratic, Republican, or Independent party, VOTE.

i wanna live in a garbage truck!!!!

How gorgeous is this Tiger? Amazing!

These incredible photos are of a White Bengal Tiger named Odin.

Odin is six years old and 10 feet long from tail to nose.
Odin lives at a Zoo in Vallejo, California, near San Francisco.

Odin with his British trainer Lee Munro. He loves his baby bottles....LOL

Odin was hand-raised at the zoo.
And after he was weaned, his British trainer, Lee Munro, discovered his remarkable skill.

When a lump of meat was thrown into a pool of water, Odin would happily dive in after it.
'He makes a funny face - and it's actually to close his nostrils to stop the water from going into his nose.'

Not all big cats enjoy the water but for Tigers from the hot climate of South-East Asia it's one way to cool down.

'Plus they hunt in and around water. They're an ambush predator so they wait for prey to come down to the water.'

'When you actually see him dive underwater he looks so graceful,'

'Odin loves the water and he loves food,' he said. 'Not all big cats will dive and swim underwater even for meat treats.'

Munro said tigers are the most powerful swimmers out of all land-dwelling animals.

Tragically, within our lifetimes, zoos might be the only places left to see these magnificent animals.

A century ago there were about 100,000 tigers in the wild.
Now there are just 2,500 adults, with the Bengal variety almost extinct.
None has been seen in the wild since the last white tiger was shot and killed in 1958.

White tigers are the most rare.

They get their whitecolor from an unusual and extremely rare genetic combination.
I hope you enjoyed these pictures as much as I did.

you go girl... margaret cho had some important info to share about PALIN...

"At first I thought Sarah Palin was some kind of Republican pandering – a misguided attempt to woo Hillary voters over to the dark side, as if they believed women voters were so stupid that they would vote for anyone in skirt, but now I see that she is much, much worse.

I have nothing against hockey moms – I just don’t want to be one. If Sarah Palin had her way, she would take away that right not to be a mom. She wants to outlaw abortion – so to call her a feminist is as laughable as calling evangelicals ‘Christians.’ They shouldn’t have the right to call themselves Christian, for they have no Christ-like attributes. I am a feminist and a Christian – and when I see Sarah Palin – I see neither. And it is official. She is evil. I saw on Violet Blue’s awesome blog that Sarah Palin forced rape victims to pay for their own forensic exams.

This is serious and bad."

"You know how I always like to share what's going on in my life with you all, and I was going to give you some news and, unfortunately, rumors started circulating all over the Internet," DeGeneres, 50, informs her audience about the something new in her life that will take effect in January – and is bound to have her glowing.

"I am here to set the record straight right now. I am not pregnant. It just turned out to be a bump. I went and had it checked out," she wisecracks.

Then came the real announcement: "I am the new face of CoverGirl."

Striking an exaggerated model-like pose, DeGeneres then explains, "That's the first thing they teach you when you're a CoverGirl."

Secret Leaked
With her commercials for the makeup giant due to be shot soon and then debut after the first of the year, DeGeneres says, "We were going to let you know [in January], but somehow people found out about it."

Revealing a photo of herself being made camera-ready, DeGeneres says, "They're putting some lip liner on me ... Man, they love lip liner. I got hours and hours"

Overall, DeGeneres admits, "I am very, very excited about it. It's a very cool thing, I'm honored and the photo shoot was 'easy, breezy, beautiful ... CoverGirl.' "

good message....

There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind. She
hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always
there for her. She told her boyfriend, 'If I could only see
the world, I will marry you.'

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages
came off, she was able to see everything, including her
boyfriend.

He asked her,'Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?' The
girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The
sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn't expected
that. The thought of looking at them the rest of her life
led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left in tears and days later wrote a note to her
saying: 'Take good care of your eyes, my dear, for before
they were yours, they were mine.'

This is how the human brain often works when our status changes.
Only a very few remember what life was like before, and who
was always by their side in the most painful situations.

Life Is a Gift

Today before you say an unkind word - Think of someone who can't
speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food - Think of someone
who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife - Think of someone
who's crying out to GOD for a companion.

Today before you complain about life - Think of someone who went
too early to heaven.

Before whining about the distance you drive Think of someone who
walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job - Think of the
unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your
job.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down - Put a smile on
your face and think: you're alive and still around.

quote...

"We could change the world tomorrow if all the millions of people around the world acted the way they believe." -- Jane Goodall

what a fantastic story... another good ole' dog!!!

Police in Scottsdale, Arizona, say a German shepherd saved his owner's life by dialing 911 when he began to have a seizure.

Joe Stalnaker says he adopted the dog, Buddy, when he was 8 weeks old and trained him to get the phone if he began to have seizure symptoms.

Stalnaker says he also trained the dog to press programmed buttons until a 911 operator is on the line.

Buddy, who is now 18 months old, can be heard whimpering on a recording of the 911 call at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday. Emergency responders arrived two minutes later.

Stalnaker was hospitalized for two days following the seizure but has recovered. He says Buddy is his best friend.

Stalnaker says his seizures are the result of injuries he received during military service.

ray boltz - thank you...

i love you Al Machado!!!!!

Would you give your pet mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to save it?

How about to a pet that's not yours?

Well, one very lucky cat owner owes a lot of thanks to a Massachusetts firefighter.

Fireman Al Machado rescued a cat from a burning apartment and that's when he noticed the kitty couldn't breathe and needed air.

Machado then began to perform mouth-to-mouth on the cat as he was carrying it outside.

The cat, a tiger angora, thankfully survived the fire, however two other cats died.

Luckily no humans were hurt during the blaze.

Two dogs were also saved with the help of oxygen from the paramedics and animal rescue personnel. Other pets were rescued too, including a ferret and some frogs.

Good thing the frogs didn't need air!

As for the cause of the fire, apparently two former tenants of the building were arrested and charged with arson.

And, at the end of it all, when Machado was asked what it tates like to give mouth-to-mouth to a cat, he laughed and said, "Like fur."

ain't this the truth!!!

"Whatever you give a woman, she's going to multiply.
If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby.
If you give her a house, she'll give you a home.
If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal.
If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart.
She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.
So - if you give her any crap, you will receive a ton of shit."

Eve Ensler, the American playwright, performer,
feminist and activist best known for "The Vagina Monologues", wrote the following about Sarah Palin:

Drill, Drill, Drill

I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last
night that she was a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore
the claws of drowned and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a particular
thing for Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or
their bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I have never seen
one in person or touched one.
Maybe it is the fact that they live so comfortably on
ice.

Whatever it is, I need the polar bears.

I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have
spent my life trying to build community, help empower women and stop
violence against them.
It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice
was all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made
this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists
But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices
is antithetical to Feminism which for me is part of one story --
connected to saving the earth, ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls options, opening our minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence and
war.
I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the
most dangerous choices of my lifetime,
and should this country chose those candidates the
fall-out may be so great, the destruction so vast in so many
areas that America may never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the
impact that duo would have on the rest of the world.

Unfortunately, this is not a joke.

In my lifetime I have seen the clownish, the inept, the

bizarre be elected to the presidency with regularity.
Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this
as a metaphor. In her world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes
or gets better or evolves.
She does not believe in global warming. The melting of the
arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the
pollution and rise of cancers, are all part of God's plan. She is
fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list. The earth, in Palin's view, is here to be taken and plundered. The wolves and the bears
are here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be taken and plundered.
Iraq is here to be taken and plundered. As she said herself of the Iraqi
war, "It was a task from God."

Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion.

She does not believe women who are raped and incested and ripped open against their will should have a right to determine whether they have their rapist's baby or
not.

She obviously does not believe in sex education or
birth control. I imagine her daughter was practicing abstinence and we know how
many babies that makes.

Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From what I
gather she has tried to ban books from the library, has a tendency to dispense with
people who think independently. She cannot tolerate an environment
of ambiguity and difference.

This is a woman who could and might very
well be the next president of the United States. She would govern one
of the most diverse populations on earth.

Sarah believes in guns. She has her own custom
Austrian hunting rifle. She has been known to kill 40 caribou at a clip. She has
shot hundreds of wolves from the air.

Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right,
her private right. But when God and Guns come together in the public sector,
when war is declared in God's name, when the rights of women are denied
in his name, that is the end of separation of church and state and the undoing
of everything America has ever tried to be.

I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we hold
this election in our hands. This vote is a vote that will determine the future not
just of the U.S., but of the planet. It will determine whether
we create policies to save the earth or make it forever uninhabitable for
humans. It will determine whether we move towards dialogue and
diplomacy in the world or whether we escalate violence through invasion,
undermining and attack. It will determine whether we go for oil, strip mining,
coal burning or invest our money in alternatives that will free us from
dependency and destruction.

It will determine if money gets spent on education and healthcare or
whether we build more and more methods of killing. It will determine
whether America is a free open tolerant society or a closed place of fear,
fundamentalism
and aggression.

If the Polar Bears don't move you to go and do everything in your
power to get Obama elected then consider the chant that filled
the hall after Palin spoke at the RNC, "Drill Drill Drill."

I think of teeth when I think of drills. I think of rape. I think of destruction.
I think of domination.

I think of military exercises that force mindless
repetition, emptying the brain of analysis, doubt, ambiguity or dissent.

I think of pain.

Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the
ozone, in the floor of the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust
between nations and peoples, more holes in the fabric of this
precious thing we call life?
