Morgan Freeman is recovering at a Memphis hospital after a car crash Sunday night.
Freeman, 71, lost control of his car just before midnight on a rural highway near his home in Ruleville, Miss.and his car flipped several times before landing in a ditch.
The Oscar-winning actor’s condition was listed as “serious” Monday morning, a spokesperson from the Regional Medical Center in Memphis confirmed to CelebTV.com.
Later that same day, Freeman’s business partner, Bill Lucketts, spoke to the press outside the hospital.
Lucketts said Freeman is still in intensive care and will require surgery to fix his fractured left elbow, Entertainment Tonight reports. He also said the actor has less serious neck and shoulder injuries. The accident occurred as Freeman was on his way home from Lucketts’ house last night, Luckett said.
The accident took place around 11:30 p.m. and occurred near the actor’s home home in Ruleville, Miss., according to authorities. The Dark Knight star was airlifted to the hospital in Tennessee.
“There’s no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved,” Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams said. He said both Freeman and his female passenger, Demaris Meyer, were wearing seat belts. Her condition was not immediately available.
“They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle,” according to the Charleston Sun-Sentinel. “He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.”
