Dr. Oz and Dr. Evans recommended products with vitamins A (Retin), C (Ascorbic Acid), and E (Tocopherol) as well as niacin - plus, it is important to gently exfoliate the skin and wear sunscreen daily. Bleaching creams, laser therapy and chemical peels are also a more expensive option.
Paula Begoun - Face:
Expert Paula Begoun recommends:
- Cleanser: gentle such as CeraVe or Olay
- Exfoliant: Glycolic AHA such as Alpha Hydrox
- Moisturizers: Antioxidants and vitamins C, E & A such as Olay, Clinique or Bobbie Brown
- Lip Care: Lip balm at night such as Prescriptives, Neutrogena or L’Oreal
The Science of Beauty - Adult Acne:
Crystal, a viewer, shared her routine to treat her adult acne which included: antibacterial soap, witch hazel, deep moisturizer, antibiotic ointment and a bleaching product. After showing her skin with the Visia machine, Dr. Oz and Dr. Evans expressed to Crystal that her routine was making her acne worse and that she needs to give herself a chance to be beautiful. They recommended:
- Wash with a gentle cleanser
- Add an oil-free moisturizer
- Address the bacteria with an acne medication
- Use a product with Retin-A
- Apply a gel sunscreen
- Eat foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids
The Science of Beauty - Foods for the Skin:
Dr. Oz provided a list of foods that help keep skin healthy. They included:
- Biotin found in legumes, avocados, soybeans and nuts to provide moisture
- Carotenoids found in salmon for elasticity
- Lycopene found in tomatoes to resist the affects of the sun
- Collagen found in pomegranates for protein
The Science of Beauty - Under Eye Bags:
Dr. Oz explained the science behind eye bags, but separated out the people who have bags that don’t go away versus those who have bags from stress or little sleep. Creams and using cold compresses are only a short term fix. For long term results, plastic surgery is the only option.
The Science of Beauty - Hair:
With 2 viewers in the audience who deal with frizzy or brittle hair, Dr. Oz shared that 40% of women experience hair loss problems. A quick test Dr. Oz announced involved grabbing a straw sized amount of hair and pulling - starting from the roots out - and seeing how many hairs come out. If more than 6 hairs come out, you are starting to lose hair rapidly. To improve hair, Dr. Oz suggested installing a simple charcoal filter into your home shower head to remove the chlorine found in tap water that can be drying. Also, cover your hair when in the sun.

- Silicone based anti-frizz serum such as Citre Shine or Got2b to help reduce heat damage
- A Remington flat iron that can be used on wet hair
- Revlon 1875 watt ionic hair dryer
- A brush with rubber tipped bristles and a wide tooth comb for detangling hair while wet
The Science of Beauty - Hair Loss
Melissa came to the show because she has been experiencing extreme hair loss in the last 6 weeks. Dr. Oz shared that hair loss can be a sign of something bigger internally, so a blood test was done on Melissa.
Dr. Oz found elevated allergies and a possible tumor in the brain. Dr. Oz shared that asking questions is not about vanity, but about life. Dr. Oz recommended that Melissa have a head MRI scan done, but that her potential condition is very treatable. Dr. Oz added that the condition of hair is a good indication of something that has happened internally during recent weeks.
The Science of Beauty - Toenails and Bunyons:
Dr. Oz gave advice to a woman in the audience who is embarrassed about her toenail fungus. He explained that it’s important to keep toes dry and expose feet to the sun.
Toe fungus is caused by an infection and can be treated using vinegar and tea tree oil or medically by pills that can be harmful to the liver. Either treatment takes several months to see improvement.
Oprah questioned Dr. Oz about bunyons since she suffers from them. He declared that surgery is only an option for bunyons if the person is experiencing pain since it takes time to recover from the procedure. Bunyons are 98% hereditary but can be worsened by wearing healed and pointed toed shoes.
Paula Begoun - Dry Heals:
Expert Paula Begoun recommends:
- Wipe heals with a Stridex pad containing 2% salicylic acid
- Cover dry area with Vaseline, 100% cocoa butter or a deep moisturizer
- Do this at night and sleep with socks on
- Improved skin should be seen in about a week
The Science of Beauty - Bad Breath:
Oprah received an email request to help solve a bad breath problem. Dr. Oz shared that bad breath can be caused by a bacteria in the stomach, gingivitis or food getting stuck in small caves in the mouth. A solution to bad breath can be found in a simple item, a tongue scraper.
The Science of Beauty - Cellulite:
Images of women with cellulite on their thighs were shown; Dr. Oz followed up by describing how fat cells enlarge and bulge, pushing out the skin which creates buckling or pouches. Unfortunately, Dr. Oz shared that there is not solution to cellulite, and that having liposuction can make the problem worse.
